01

Check length with skates on

Stand upright with the blade on the ice. Chin-to-nose is the normal starting zone; forwards often go shorter and defencemen often go longer.

02

Use body weight for starting flex

Start near half body weight in pounds. Young or lighter players often benefit from slightly less flex so they can load the shaft.

Starting flex by body weight

Player weight	Starting flex	Common category
35–50 lb	20–25	Youth
50–70 lb	25–35	Youth / Junior
70–90 lb	35–45	Junior

110–130 lb	50–60	Intermediate
130–150 lb	60–70	Intermediate / Senior

170–190 lb	80–90	Senior
190–220 lb	90–105	Senior

Cutting changes flex.Shortening the shaft makes it play stiffer; adding an extension makes it play softer.
